90's Style: Hip-Hop Top 5: Volume I
64
Take a step back in time with me.
I guess 1990 wasn't that long ago when you look at the grand scheme of things, but your talking to a guy that was born in 1988. I have covered a lot of the guys from my area recently, but decided recently that I would write my next about my favorites, from my childhood. I remember making mix-tapes off the radio onto cassettes and playing them all the way to elementary school. Sometimes we'd even buy them off each other so we could mix it up. My Pop's most assuredly was not a fan, but I suppose that was some of the appeal for me. Ya, I was that white kid listening to Eminem or whatever else made my parents cringe, but my parents didn't let me dress like a wigger and talk back (thanks by the way). Anyway, I hope those who follow enjoy, thanks so much for listening :D
#5) Kottonmouth Kings: Dogs Life
One of my all time favorite bands. I drive my girlfriend crazy listening to them all the time. They are a little bit punk-rock, a little bit hip-hop, and 100% stoner. The have been reppin' the subnoize, So Cal nation for a long time, and lifer fans like me still love what they bring to the stage more than a decade later. I saw them play in 2011 at Hempfest, a show I'll never forget. One Love from the Kottonmouth Kings!
#4) Jay-Z feat. Mary J Blige: Cant Knock The Hustle
In my opinion Jay-Z has fallen off in recent years, but kick it back to 1996, and you couldn't find one better. Jay has always been one of my favorites, but I have to say that I much more a fan of the mid to late nineties Jay. Hard to knock on a legend though :D Hova!
#3) Cypress Hill: Insane In The Brain
Now in 1993 I was 5 years old, but I can remember waking up before my parents to turn on MTV every morning so I could catch the newest music videos. It was always the best part of my day. I can still to this day remember seeing the "Insane In The Brain" video and thinking how cool it looked. Still looks pretty cool to me :D
#2) Outkast: Rosa Parks
Knocking on the door of the 2000's, "Rosa Parks" was controversial, new, and a classic all wrapped in one. No drugs, no alcohol, Outkast's messages are always clear and full of passion, a blend that has gone MIA in the hip-hop world today.Gotta love the blend of different musical styles as well!
#1) Eminem: Infinite
Whew, this is a throw back. I was sitting in my bedroom with my buddy when I first heard this, it was off a tape his brother had made. I'll never forget thinking, wow, a white guy is doing this? My life changed forever, because he MADE me a fan. I'll say I liked hip-hop music before that, but I loved it there-after. I couldn't help but listen. He has a lot of haters, but his fans outnumber them 100:1. Thanks again for following along, and keep in touch for more!

Up and awesome Seattle. I had to vote for Jay. "Can't Knock The Hustle" was a great song, a true classic. I like the 90s and early 2000s hip hop. I really don't like much of the new school rap. I forgot all about the Kottonmouth Kings. It makes me feel old. And Eminem, he is a lyrical genius. Great hub.

Oh man I used to love the Kottonmouth Kings when I was a kid. That was group I had just about forgotten about. Dog's Life was great.
